ROAD TRIP | 1 DAY TRIP IDEA | TRAVEL ESSENTIAL
Visitors are often overwhelmed by the number of places to visit in Mauritius. A major difference between its sister islands Maldives or Seychelles is that there are a lot more than just beaches in Mauritius. Leaving the nice beaches and going inside the island, you will find exciting villages, waterfalls, and mountains to climb. The amazing mix of characters makes it a holiday favorite. Plan your road trip with our conveniently designed journeys to make the most of your holiday.
“Please tell me the best places to visit or the best beaches in Mauritius.” So, we’ve put together some itinerary options of activities & things to do.
Depending on your adventurous aptitude, fitness level, and enthusiasm for exercise, having a rental car might lead you to change or reconsider some ideas I have put together. Feel free to add or remove stops, as these plans should give you an overall idea of where some places are located and what you can do around them. Mauritius will reward you for even the smallest attempt at exploration. The aim is to help you plan your days more efficiently and pack more “I’ve-been-there” moments during your holidays. Mind you, you can see all those places in 1 hour with a helicopter tour.
Also, if you are only looking for some iconic places for photos, have a read through this blog “THE TOP 10 MAURITIUS PHOTO LOCATIONS.”
Important things to note
– We gave our best estimate on the number of stops, estimated time to complete, places to eat, and the fatigue level at the end of the trip. We also included some activities around the trip.
– These trips are not designed to be used by public transport (bus). We tried to put a plan together for those traveling by bus, but we warn you, bus schedules are highly unorganized in the south & east.
– These are only high-level stops with only names; click on them for more details about the places.
– You can present some itineraries to a taxi driver, but ask for an estimated quote beforehand. We highly recommend you rent a car if you plan to go out more than once.
– Petrol stations are unavailable after Black River up to Surinam: 40 km or 1 hr.
– Petrol stations are unavailable from Bel Air to Mahebourg: 32 km or 45 min.
– There are no ATMs in the south except in Mahebourg, Riviere des Anguilles, and Black River.
– If you are coming from the north and need to go to the southeast, use the motorway (avoid Port-Louis). Turn off on the new motorway and keep going south.
– East coast residents, if you need to go west, go onto the motorway, turn off at Phoenix, and follow signs to Flic en Flac.
– We recommend starting the south road trip in the southwest (Le Morne) so you can finish at Mahebourg and use the motorway to go back to the north, east, or west. Those staying on the west can either go back the same way or use the faster motorway.
– Best to travel with some cash; Rs3000 is more than enough if you are not planning activities. (Assuming you are paying for fuel by card; if not, bring an additional Rs3000 or check the cost of activities.)
