A major difference between its sister islands Maldives or Seychelles, there are a lot more than just beaches in Mauritius. Leaving the nice beaches and going inside the island, you will have exciting villages, waterfalls and mountains to climb. The amazing mix of characters make it a holiday favourite. Depending on your adventurous aptitude, fitness level, enthusiasm in doing exercise, having a rental car, you might want to change or reconsider some ideas I have put together. Feel free to add or remove stops as these plans should give you an overall idea of where some places are located and what you can do around it. Mauritius will reward you by even the smallest attempt at exploration. The aim is to help you plan your days more efficiently and pack more I’ve-been-there-moment during your holidays. Mind you, you can see all those places in 1 hour with a helicopter tour.

Important things to note

I gave my best estimate on the number of stops, estimated time to complete and places to eat and the fatigue level at the end of the trip. I also included some activities around.
These trips are not designed to be used by Public Transport (Bus). I tried to put a plan together for those travelling by bus, but I warn you, BUS SCHEDULE ARE HIGHLY NOT ORGANISED IN THE SOUTH & EAST
These are only high-level stops with only names, click on there for more details about the place
You can present some itineraries to a taxi driver but ask for an estimated quote before. I highly recommend you to rent a car if you plan to go out more than once.
Petrol station are unavailable after Black River up to Surinam: 40km or 1hr
Petrol Station are unavailable from Bel Air to Mahebourg: 32Km or 45min
There are no ATM in the south except in Mahebourg and Riviere es Anguilles & Black river.
If you are coming from the north and need to go to the south east, use the motorway(avoid Port-Louis) Turn off on new Motorway and keep going south
East coast residents, if you need to go west. Go onto motorway, turn off at Phoenix, follow sign to Flic en flac
I recommend the south road trip to start on the South west (le Morne), so you can finish at Mahebourg and use the motorway to go back to the north, east or West. Those staying on the west, you can either go back the same way or use the faster motorway. Those staying at Le Morne you can start at Mahebourg and do the opposite, or start at Le Morne and go back the same way.
Best to travel with some cash Rs3000 is MORE than enough if you are not planning activities. (assuming you are paying fuel by card, if not,bring an additional Rs3000 or check cost of activity)
